Table of Contents

1. Acceptance of Privacy Policy

Welcome to The Pause Technologies (“thePause”, “we”, “us” or “our”) and our Privacy Policy (“Privacy Policy”). This Privacy Policy is important and affects your legal rights, so please read carefully.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or information resellers for advertising or other commercial purposes.

By accessing or using https://thepause.ai/, our mobile application(s), any web-based dashboard or account portal where you can access and manage your thePause data, and various related websites and services (collectively, the “thePause Services”), you agree to be bound by this Privacy Policy and any terms incorporated by reference. By using thePause Services and/or submitting or collecting any personal data via thePause Services, you accept and expressly consent to our collection, use, and sharing of your personal information as described in this Privacy Policy. This policy applies whether you use our website on a computer or on a mobile device (e.g., in a mobile browser), and when you use our mobile application(s).

If you do not agree with this Privacy Policy, you may not access or use thePause Services.

Our processing of personal information will be undertaken consistent with applicable privacy laws in the jurisdictions where we operate, including but not limited to U.S. federal and state laws and the Canadian Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (“PIPEDA”). We may update this policy to reflect new laws, regulations, or jurisdictions. We are not currently a HIPAA-covered entity or business associate. We may pursue HIPAA compliance in the future. If we become subject to HIPAA or other sector-specific rules, we will provide any required additional notices (e.g., a HIPAA notice of privacy practices) in addition to or in connection with this policy.

2. Information We Collect

We collect information you provide directly, information we collect automatically when you use our services, information specific to our mobile app (including with your permission), and information we derive or infer from the above.

a. Personal Information We Collect Directly from You

We may collect personal information you voluntarily provide, including, without limitation:

  • Account information:Verified email address (required to create an account), and optionally phone number or other identifiers you provide. Where we collect age-related information (e.g., for “Gauge your stage” or personalization), we collect approximate age (month and year of birth) only. We do not collect your exact date of birth. For employer-sponsored or benefits programs, your account may be linked to a work email for payment processing and subscription granting; in such cases, data shared with employer dashboards is anonymized and aggregated with reasonable protections for anonymity. Employer reporting is only provided in aggregated form and only when the cohort meets a minimum threshold of 50; otherwise results are withheld or further aggregated. We apply measures intended to reduce re-identification risk (e.g., minimum thresholds and aggregation rules). We do not share identifiable personal health or symptom data with employers.
  • Company information:Where relevant (e.g., company address), such as for employer-sponsored or benefits programs.
  • Symptom and health-related self-reports: You may report menopause-related symptoms (e.g., brain fog, muscle weakness, sexual interest, hot flashes, night sweats, and many other symptoms we track), check-in responses (e.g., no effect, mild, or impactful), and personalized check-in cadences (daily, weekly, or monthly depending on symptom relevance). We may also collect menstrual history, medical background (including surgeries, chemotherapy, prior conditions, birth control use), prior pregnancies, and use of substances such as alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana where you choose to provide this. This information is highly sensitive health data and is collected only with your consent and used as described in this policy.
  • Content and other information you provide: Journal entries, check-ins, mood, sleep data you log, credentials, message content, and other identifying information you choose to provide. We may use such content to personalize your experience and support features (see “Artificial Intelligence” and “Conversations with Harmoni” below). We may also collect content, preferences, or data you share through other current or future features; we will update this policy when our collection practices change materially.
  • Information from third-party health and wellness integrations: Via our health and wellness integration partner(s) and only with your opt-in consent, we may receive data from wearables and health or nutritional apps you choose to connect (e.g., device health platforms, fitness trackers, nutritional apps). What we receive depends on the permissions you grant; individual data types (e.g., heart rate, sleep duration, activity, nutrition) may be opt-in per provider. We do not use this data for advertising or sell it.

The categories above are illustrative. Additional information may be collected as disclosed at the point of collection or with your consent. You do not need to check this policy for every new question or data point we add within these categories; we will update this policy when there are material changes to our practices.

b. Information We Automatically Collect

When you use thePause Services, we may automatically collect information, including but not limited to:

  • IP address
  • Device and browser type
  • Pages visited and time spent
  • Referring and exit URLs
  • Usage frequency and related analytics

This information is collectively referred to as Traffic Data.

c. Information Collected Through Our Mobile Application(s)

When you use thePause mobile app (iOS and/or Android), we may additionally collect:

  • Device information: Device type, operating system and version, unique device identifiers (e.g., advertising ID, device ID), mobile carrier, and where relevant language, time zone, or locale.
  • App usage data: Features used, in-app actions, session length, meditation/podcast playback tracking, gamification (e.g., badges and engagement), and crash or performance data. We collect this data in connection with your use of the app and enabled features; we do not collect data when the app is in the background except as needed for features you have enabled (e.g., syncing when you are back online).
  • Permissions-based data:Only where you grant permission, we may collect:
Health and biometric data: Via device health platforms (e.g., Apple Health, Android Health Connect) and/or our health and wellness integration partner(s) connecting to wearables and health apps – only with your express opt-in; data types (e.g., sleep, heart rate, activity, nutrition) depend on what you authorize. We do not use this data for advertising or sell it.
Location data: We do not request or use precise location. We may infer general geographic area from network traffic (e.g., IP address) where it is standard practice; third-party services we use may collect IP or similar data in accordance with their policies.
Microphone / audio: Only if you use features that require it (e.g., speech-to-text for journaling or future voice-based features); any future use of audio to infer health or hormonal state will be disclosed at the point of collection.
Notifications: Push notification tokens to deliver alerts you opt into; you may disable push in device settings.
  • Offline and cached data: Data stored on your device for offline use; we may sync this when you are back online.

We do not access your device camera, contacts, photo library, or clipboard unless a specific feature requires it and you have granted permission; any such use will be disclosed at the point of collection. Data collected when you download or access the app through an app store (e.g., Apple App Store, Google Play) may also be collected by the store operator under its own privacy policy, which we do not control.

d. Derived and Inferred Information

We may derive or infer information about you from the data you provide and from your use of thePause Services. This includes:

  • Menopause stage estimation (“Gauge your stage”): We may estimate where you are in the menopause transition using proprietary logic (which may include algorithmic and/or AI-assisted methods) based on factors such as symptom survey responses, menstrual history, approximate age (month and year of birth only), medical background (e.g., surgeries, chemotherapy, conditions, birth control use), and statistical or clinical models (e.g., aligned with frameworks such as STRAW+10 for female reproductive aging). Different pathways (e.g., natural vs. induced menopause) may be taken into account.
  • Personalization: The symptom tracker and check-in schedule may adapt to your inputs (e.g., symptoms you report may trigger follow-up questions; symptoms not experienced may be deprioritized but periodically rechecked). Our news feed and notification center may serve targeted content (articles, videos, meditations, podcasts, challenges, product recommendations) based on your profile and interests. This is **first-party** personalization; we do **not** sell your data or share it with third-party advertisers for ad targeting.
  • Other insights: We may use your data to improve recommendations, conversation quality, and service functionality.

You may correct or update the underlying information you provide (e.g., symptom responses, medical history) through the app or by contacting us; corrected inputs may affect derived results.

3. How We Collect Information

We collect information through your use of and interactions with thePause Services (including the mobile app and website), voluntary submissions, permissions you grant (e.g., for health data or notifications), and standard technologies such as cookies, web beacons, and analytics services (“Tracking Tools”) as described in Section 4\.

4. Tracking Tools, Advertising, and Opt-Out Options

a. Tracking Tools

When you use our website (including on a mobile device), we or our service providers may use technologies such as cookies and local or session storage to support functionality, preferences, and analytics, as described in this policy.

We use the following Tracking Tools:

Cookies

Used to enable essential functionality, customize your experience, measure performance and analytics, and support security. Cookie categories include:

  • Absolutely Necessary Cookies
  • Performance Cookies
  • Functionality Cookies

You may manage cookie preferences through your browser settings. In the mobile app, relevant preferences may be available in app or device settings.

Web Beacons

Used to analyze service usage and email engagement.

Web Service Analytics

Used to improve usability and performance; generally do not collect personal information unless provided.

Mobile Device Identifiers

Used to personalize services and analyze usage patterns (e.g., in the mobile app). You may limit ad tracking via your device settings (e.g., “Limit Ad Tracking” on iOS, “Opt out of Ads Personalization” on Android).

b. Advertising and Third-Party Targeting

We do not sell your personal information or share it with third-party advertisers, data brokers, or ad networks for behavioral advertising or retargeting. Any personalized content (e.g., in-app news feed, challenges, recommendations) is first-party only and does not involve sharing your data with advertisers. We may use standard analytics (e.g., IP address, device type) for our own service improvement; such data is not sold or shared for ad targeting.

c. Opt-Out Options

You may:

  • Withdraw consent by contacting info@thepause.ai
  • Adjust browser or device settings (including mobile ad and privacy settings)
  • Use industry opt-out tools (e.g., NAI, DAA, AppChoices)

Opting out may limit certain tracking or personalization; it does not stop all data collection described in this policy.

5. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

We do not respond to browser Do Not Track (DNT) signals due to lack of industry consensus.

We do honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals where legally required.

6. Artificial Intelligence & Automated Decision-Making

We use AI systems (including our companion feature “Harmoni”) to personalize and improve thePause Services. Harmoni is powered by foundational AI model(s) provided by third-party vendor(s), customized with user context, additional knowledge (e.g., vector databases), and fine-tuning to support empathetic, informative conversations and recommendations. When you use AI-powered features (such as Harmoni), we send the content necessary to provide those features (e.g., your messages and relevant context) to our AI infrastructure provider, Microsoft Azure, which processes the data on our behalf to deliver the service. We do not use this data for advertising or sell it. Our agreement with Azure requires that your data be processed in accordance with our instructions and with privacy and security protections that are consistent with this policy.

  • We do not train our own foundational or generative AI models from scratch.
  • We use pre-trained third-party model(s) and customize them as described above; we do not disclose or lock in to specific AI vendors in this policy.
  • Data sources may include self-reported health and symptom data, biometric and wearable data (with consent), journal and conversation content, and other usage data as described in this policy.

Conversations with Harmoni: We may store conversations you have with Harmoni to operate the service, support safety, comply with law, and improve quality. This content may be used to improve our models (e.g., additional training or fine-tuning) and to infer information about you to provide higher-quality conversations and recommendations. We do not use this data for sale or for third-party advertising.

Training and improving predictive models: We use aggregated and/or de-identified data for model improvement where feasible, and we do not use identifiable user health data to train models. Identifiable data may be accessed only to operate the service, maintain safety, and troubleshoot, consistent with this policy. We may use other collected data (e.g., de-identified or aggregated symptom data, usage data) to develop, train, or improve predictive and algorithmic models. These models support features described in this policy, including menopause stage estimation (“Gauge your stage”), symptom and check-in personalization, content recommendations, and other health or wellness insights. We may fine-tune or customize pre-trained models and develop proprietary algorithms using collected data as described above. We do not use data collected through our services to train predictive models for advertising, and we do not sell such data or model outputs to third parties for advertising or other commercial purposes unrelated to providing thePause Services.

Limitations of AI: AI and large language models can produce inaccurate or biased outputs (“hallucinations”), and recommendations are not a substitute for professional medical advice. We strive to reduce errors and bias but cannot guarantee accuracy of every response or recommendation. If you have health concerns, please consult a qualified healthcare provider.

You may contact info@thepause.ai with AI-related questions.

a. Data Collected by AI Systems

  • Usage and interaction data (including conversation and journal content where applicable)

AI systems may support:

  • Content and conversation recommendations
  • Personalization of check-ins and symptom follow-ups
  • Fraud detection

c. User Rights and Automated Decision-Making

  • Request explanations of automated decisions
  • Opt out of profiling where offered
  • Access, correct, or delete relevant data

7. How We Use Your Information

We may use information (including de-identified and/or aggregated information) to understand who uses thePause Services and to deliver a better experience. • Combining information from third parties with information we have about you for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy
  • Personalizing content (e.g., news feed, notification center, challenges, meditations, product recommendations) based on your profile and interests – first-party only; we do not sell your data or share it with third-party advertisers for ad targeting

  • Enforcing this Privacy Policy and other agreements

We do not sell your personal information or share it with advertisers, data brokers, or information resellers for advertising or retargeting.

By providing your email and/or phone number and taking an affirmative action (e.g., checking a box or clicking “complete”), you consent to receive emails, calls, and/or text messages, including automated messages. Normal message and data rates may apply. We may discontinue these programs at any time without notice.

8. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not share your data with third-party advertisers, data brokers, or information resellers for advertising or retargeting.

We may share information with the following types of recipients:

We currently store and process personal information in the United States.

Service providers who perform operational services for us. Some vendors may process data on our behalf. We require service providers to use personal information only to provide services to us and to protect it through contractual safeguards. We do not permit our service providers to use your personal information (including health data) to train their own models for their own purposes, except as allowed by contract and applicable law. If our vendor practices materially change, we will update this policy. These may include:
Cloud hosting and storage (e.g., servers in the United States); we may use different providers for different parts of our service (e.g., core user data vs. AI/LLM-related data). Our cloud provider(s) may change.
AI/ML processing (e.g., Microsoft Azure) to power AI-powered features; data sent is limited to what is necessary to provide the feature and is subject to contractual privacy and security requirements.
Payment and subscription processors (e.g., app stores, subscription management, and payment processors). We do not store full payment card details; we may store billing-related information (e.g., subscription status, purchase history, last four digits, receipts, country/zip) as needed to provide the service and comply with law.
Analytics and crash-reporting providers to improve the app.
Email and push notification providers where you have opted in to messages.
Health and wellness integration partner(s) that connect to wearables and health or nutritional apps you authorize; we receive only the data you opt in to share.

Our service providers, integration partners, and technology may change over time. We will continue to use recipients that provide appropriate safeguards for your data. We will update this policy when the categories of recipients or the purposes for sharing materially change.

Other entities within The Pause Technologies group: At your discretion, you may choose to share your app data (e.g., with telehealth clinicians or other Pause entities) for health or support purposes.
Business transaction counterparties: In connection with a proposed merger, sale, or change of control; we will make reasonable efforts to notify you before your information becomes subject to different privacy practices.
Legal and safety: When required by law or when we determine in good faith that disclosure is needed to comply with law, protect the rights or safety of you or others, enforce our policies, or respond to claims of third-party rights. This may include obligations to disclose messages or content (e.g., shared with Harmoni, in community forums, with other users, or in journals) to authorities when required by law (e.g., court order, subpoena, or to protect safety).

Community: We may link from the app to an online support community (e.g., a third-party social platform or one we host). Where the community is third-party hosted, there is no data communication between the app and that platform; participation there is subject to that third party’s privacy policy. Any community we host is subject to our moderation and reporting policies as disclosed in the app or terms.

Device health platforms (e.g., Apple Health, Android Health Connect, Samsung Health) and other health integrations: We may use or disclose data obtained through these platforms only with your express permission, and only for: (i) improving health management or health research (including with third parties where you consent), and (ii) sharing with third parties who also provide you health and/or fitness services. We do not use or disclose this data for advertising, marketing, or use-based data mining. We do not sell your personal information or health data to advertising platforms, data brokers, or information resellers, and we do not use such health data to serve ads. If you connect data via Apple Health, Android Health Connect, or similar platforms, their respective privacy policies and developer terms also apply to how that data may be used.

Sensitive data is used only as permitted under applicable laws (e.g., CCPA/CPRA). Where state law requires specific consent or disclosure for consumer health data (e.g., Washington’s My Health My Data Act, Nevada) or biometric information (e.g., Illinois BIPA, Texas, Washington), we obtain consent and use such data only as described in this policy. We do not sell consumer health data.

10. Storage and Security

We use commercially reasonable safeguards to protect your information. No transmission or storage system is completely secure; any information you send or provide to us is transmitted at your own risk. We cannot guarantee absolute security, and we are not liable for unauthorized access, use, or disclosure that occurs despite our safeguards, except to the extent required by applicable law.

11. Your Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, restrict use of, or receive a portable copy of your data–see Sections 12-15. In general:

You can choose what information to provide. You may generate reports from your app data to share with healthcare providers or others at your discretion; we do not control how you use or share those reports. To the extent required by applicable law, we will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights (e.g., we will not deny services, provide a different level of service, or charge different prices for exercising those rights).

12. California Privacy Rights

California residents have the following rights to the extent required by applicable law, subject to verification. Rights may change as state or federal law evolves; we will update this section to reflect material changes.

Community forums: Any community forum (whether hosted by a third party, e.g., a social platform, or by us) is subject to reasonable moderation. We may require or encourage user reporting of harmful or policy-violating content. We are not responsible for third-party privacy practices. Review third-party policies and your device/app permissions before sharing information or granting access.

18. Updates to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time by posting the revised version on our website and/or in the app. The “Last Updated” date at the top will be revised when we do.
